JACKSON COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - Several Jackson County Sheriff's Office deputies were injured while removing a man displaying a knife from the roof of a house.

On Wednesday, William Ray Howard, 37, of Alford, Florida, and the deputies were treated at a hospital for their injuries and later released.

One deputy responded to a Vancouver Drive address in Alford in reference to a suspicious person call and the person possibly being wanted, a news release said.

That deputy called for backup as Howard made "comments of concern," and other deputies arrived at the residence.

Deputies ordered Howard to come down from the roof, but he displayed a knife and refused to comply with their commands. He was tazed and scuffled with deputies until he got free of deputies and fell off the roof.

A deputy on the ground engaged Howard, who swung a knife at the deputy, striking him in the face and causing a superficial wound.

Howard continued to fight and bit a deputy on the arm. Another deputy suffered a dislocated thumb before Howard was handcuffed.

Howard was transported to the Jackson County Correctional Facility to await first appearance.

Howard faces several charges:

  • 1 count of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer with a deadly weapon
  • 1 count of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer (biting)
  • 1 count of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer with a deadly weapon
  • 1 count of battery on a law enforcement officer
  • 2 counts of resisting a law enforcement officer with violence and
  • a warrant out of Bay County for violation of probation for resisting an officer.
