JACKSON COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - Two people have died after their trailer caught fire over the weekend.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office and the State Fire Marshal's Office responded to a fire on 3614 Hwy 69 in Greenwood, Florida. After a short investigation, the victims were identified as Caroyln D. Melnik and Billy E. Sanders.

Officials say family members who also live on the property discovered the travel trailer had been burned at approximately 8:30 a.m.

Reports say the family member who found discovered the charred trailer attempted to pry the front door open, but was unsuccessful. The family member then tried to bust the west front window.

Upon investigating the scene further, deputies say it appeared that the fire started on the couch located outside of Melnik's and Sanders' bedroom. Investigators say Melnik appeared to have been sleep and Sanders appeared to have been trying to alert Melnik before he died.

Both victims were badly burned and it is possible they both died of smoke inhalation. No foul play is suspected.

JCSO says the fire appeared to have been contained inside the travel trailer and smoldered itself out instead of igniting further.

Further investigation will be conducted by the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
