CARRABELLE, FL (WTXL) - Could the World's Smallest Police Station be moving? That's what city leaders in Carrabelle were discussing Tuesday night.
The World's Smallest Police Station is phone booth on U.S. 98 near County Road 67. It came into being in 1963, when the city says they had problems with tourists making unauthorized long distance calls on its police phone. It's been featured on "Ripley's Believe It Out" and "Johnny Carson."
Tuesday night, city leaders met with the community to look at the possibility of moving the landmark from its current location to the newly-renovated "Welcome Park Triangle." They say moving it will increase it's visibility and accessibility. However, as soon as the idea was brought up to residents, it was shot down.
Lillian Smith, who works at The Carrabelle History Museum, says "I just feel like if it's moved it's not going to be the same. I don't know how to explain it. It'll be over there, as you come into Carrabelle, the welcome to Carrabelle. And that place is not kept up and I just think it's where it needs to be. I just hate to see, like you up root something and then a lot of people will lose interest in it."
City leaders say the issue has been put aside for now. However, they hope to bring the proposal up again, saying moving the landmark will greatly decrease the safety risk for tourists, since it is so close to the road.
