JACKSON COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - A correctional officer trainee has been arrested after an investigation into her bringing drugs into a local facility revealed she instead smuggled in a gold grill mold kit to give to an inmate.
The Florida Department of Corrections’ (FDC) Office of the Inspector General (OIG) announced the arrest of Correctional Officer Trainee Crystal Leeks.
Leeks is charged with introduction of contraband and possession of contraband.
According to a probable cause affidavit, security staff at the Jackson Correctional Institution received information on June 14 that Leeks was intending to smuggle in an unknown type and amount of drugs into the facility.
The next day, officials interviewed Leeks and determined that she intentionally smuggled in a "gold teeth dental mold kit," which is commonly used for making grills, with the intent to deliver the kit to an inmate.
Following the interview, officials searched Leeks' car and found a partially full bottle of Crown Royal along with two Heineken beers and one Corona.
Based on the investigation, Leeks was charged with introduction of contraband into a state correctional institution and possession of contraband (alcohol).
