TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A Tallahassee man has been arrested, accused of ordering two packages containing a substance historically known as a "date rape drug."
The Tallahassee Police Department arrested Thad Ray on Thursday.
On Tuesday, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement identified two international packages destined for Tallahassee.
When officials examined the packages, they found an unknown liquid substance. They say the substance tested positive for gamma-Butyrolactone (GBL).
GBL is a schedule 1 controlled substance which is commonly used as a steroid substitute and is also known historically as a "date rape drug." Both packages were taken in for investigation.
Through an investigation conducted by TPD and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), authorities were able to determine that Ray, ordered the packages.
TPD says he was found and arrested while in possession of the parcels. They note he is a registered sex offender and was on probation at the time of his arrest.
Ray was charged with trafficking in GBL and violation of probation for a felony sexual offense.
