Inmates assault two officers at Suwannee Correctional Institution

LIVE OAK, Fla. (WTXL) – Two correctional officers were assaulted by inmates at Suwannee Correctional Institution.

One officer was transported to an outside hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Brian Kirsch assaulted an officer at approximately 9:30 a.m. Friday. He stabbed the officer multiple times. Lawrence Johnson struck an officer in the face.

The facility was placed on lockdown, and both inmates will be transferred to a more restrictive housing unit, according to a news release.

The Department’s Office of Inspector General is conducting an investigation, and the Office of Intelligence is reviewing the incident to determine necessary action.

The Suwannee County Sheriff's Office says the officer who was hospitalized for the stabbing has since been released.
