NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City inmate with a long history of drug-related arrests has been found dead of a suspected overdose inside the Rikers Island jail complex.
An internal jail memo obtained by The Associated Press shows Richard Gonzalez was found in a holding pen Wednesday morning.
A city official tells the AP investigators suspect the 45-year-old inmate died from a drug overdose. The official wasn't permitted to discuss an ongoing investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity.
A medical examiner will determine how he died.
Police records show Gonzalez has been arrested 26 times since 1986. He was arrested Tuesday on misdemeanor criminal trespass and drug possession charges. His bail was set at $4,000.
Attempts to reach his family weren't successful. His lawyer hasn't returned a message seeking comment.
