HAMILTON COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - The driver of an 18-wheeler is in critical condition in the hospital after a single vehicle accident. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the driver is 57-year-old Steven Earl Guice of Port Saint Lucie, Florida.
The accident happened about 2:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon in the northbound lane of I-75 just north of exit 467/CR 143.
Troopers say Guice was heading north on I-75 when for an unknown reason, he ran off the road, hit a traffic sign, struck the border fence and drove into the woods, where he hit a large tree. FHP says the truck then became engulfed in flames, but Guice managed to escape.
He was flown to the hospital to be treated for his injuries.
Troopers believe that medical issues may have contributed to this crash.
