GEORGIA (WTXL) - Some important things to keep in mind as residents fire up the grill and get the fireworks ready for the July 4th holiday.

The Georgia Department of Insurance says the safest way to enjoy fireworks is by attending a public display. They say each year, around 8,000 people are treated in hospital emergency rooms for fireworks-related injuries.

If you do plan on using fireworks, they have these tips to offer:

- Make sure you buy them from a licensed fireworks dealer...observe state laws and read labels before you set anything off.

- Never let kids near the fireworks unsupervised, and don't let them ignite fireworks.

- You should also wear safety glasses and light only one firework at a time. Never relight one, either.

- Finally, set them off in a clear area, and have water nearby.
