TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - As 2017 wraps up, we're taking a look at the important people we lost in the community this year.
An area man is now hailed as a hero after losing his own life to save a young boy from drowning.
April 30 started out just like any normal day for the Maynor family. 29-year-old Bruce Maynor, Jr., his wife, and their kids love the beach and they often took vacations to St. George Island in Franklin County.
Maynor was a pretty good swimmer.
That's why, when a young boy, a family friend, started to slip into the waters, Maynor didn't hesitate to jump in after him. He was able to save the young boy's life, but the current swept him back into the waves.
It's been eight months since that happened and even as the family works to heal, it's still a day they will never forget.
Bruce Maynor is survived by his wife Amber and two daughters, Makayla and Morgan.
In November, local law enforcement posted a sign with his picture on the beach. Police, and Maynor's family, hope it will serve as a reminder to beach goers to be safe and aware of beach conditions.
