TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - At age 40, Governor Ron DeSantis is the youngest Florida governor in a century.

He is closer in age to college students than his predecessor Senator Rick Scott who is 66.

Florida Governor Rick DeSantis is a member of Generation X, he brings a generational shift to the gubernatorial office as he succeeds the three baby boomers before him.

About a quarter of the students WTXL spoke to said they would prefer a younger governor to an older one.

"I think that compared to someone who is older from another generation I think that someone who is closer in age to our generation, I would like someone who is closer in age to our generation," said student Kayla Phillips.

Others WTXL spoke to said it all comes down to viewpoints whether they match up or they don't.

"He really doesn't align with my political views especially when it comes to climate change so I'd like to see a lot more done with that," said student, Quinn Chittenden.

For now, the new governor may have some work to do if he wants to convince those who voted against him.

"I think if Andrew Gillum would have won it would have been better because Andrew Gillum was actually on FAMU's campus rallying while Ron DeSantis didn't," said student Kayla Hopkins.

Most of the young adults WTXL spoke to agreed that DeSantis' age alone isn't a huge factor when it comes to his governorship it's all about relatability, the policies that he chooses to implement and how well he works with other parties to get things done.
