Immigrants Wait, Hope, Plan for Obama Order

Posted

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) - Immigrants in the country illegally already are flooding attorneys' offices with calls to see if they can qualify under President Barack Obama's yet-to-be-announced plan to shield as many as 5 million immigrants from deportation.

Obama will reveal the long-awaited administrative order on Thursday.

Immigration lawyer Alex Galvez says he's going to have to add phone lines to meet the demand. Attorney Annaluisa Padilla says she's fielding twice as many calls as usual.

While Obama has yet to reveal details of the order, immigrant advocates are gearing up to help millions determine if they are eligible to apply.

Republicans are opposed to the president's likely actions, with some conservative members threatening to pursue a government shutdown if he acts this year.
