ECHOLS COUNTY, Ga. (ECSO) – An alleged identity thief is in custody tonight. This after investigators discovered multiple credit cards and billing statements belonging to different individuals in 24-year-old Ashley Humphrey’s car.

Echols County Sheriff Randy Courson received information from a concerned citizen, Tuesday afternoon, involving a possible identity fraud. The citizen stated that pieces of mail had been sent to some of their rental properties under names of people other than the tenants that lived there. Sheriff Courson assigned Investigator Will Neel to begin an investigation on this complaint.

During Neel’s investigation, a call was made to the landlord who made the complaint. The call was from a tenant who said that a person was at their home attempting to pick up mail. Neel watched the vehicle and then conducted a traffic stop.

The driver of the vehicle, Ashley Renea Humphrey, of Jasper, Fla. gave consent to Neel to search the vehicle. Neel discovered multiple credit cards belonging to different individuals.

Humphrey was taken into custody and charged with three counts of felony identity fraud and one felony count of attempting and conspiring to commit identity theft.

The evidence collected linked Humphrey to multiple felony cases that are currently being worked by Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, Valdosta Police Department and the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office.

Additional charges and arrest are pending.
