Identity of 70-Year-Old Woman Killed in Valdosta House Fire Released

VALDOSTA, Ga. (WTXL) - The Valdosta Fire Department has revealed the identity of a 70-year-old woman who was killed in a house fire. 

On Wednesday around 9:45 a.m., VFD said that they responded to a hose fire on East 3rd Avenue. When the first unit arrived, the reported that heavy smoke and fire were coming from one of the side windows.

Prior to firefighters arrival, crews were also told that an elderly person was inside the home. Crews said that they fought the fire aggressively and searched the home to rescue the citizen. 

The fire, put out by 10:15 a.m., resulted in the death of 70-year-old Alneatha Whitfield, who was in one of the house's rooms.

“We are all saddened by this loss of life,” said Valdosta Fire Chief Freddie Broome. "As always, our highly-trained firefighters responded quickly to the emergency call and made every effort to identify and evacuate any individuals inside.” 

The fire is currently under investigation; however, officials said that it does not appear to be suspicious.
