LEON COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - Leon County held the season's first Hazardous Waste and Electronics Collection event this weekend.

The event gives people the chance to get rid of hazardous items and old electronics safely. Last year, more than 52 tons of hazardous waste and 41.4 tons of electronic scrap were collected in Leon County.

"These Items can cause risk during transport with hazardous waste," said Richard Lobinske, Leon County's Hazardous Waste Manager. "There have been numerous instances across the country of garbage collection trucks [catching] fire because materials have reacted inside of them. If this material gets into landfills, it may eventually seep into the ground water and you don't want these in our drinking water."

If you missed this collection event, you can catch one of the 10 more coming up in 2017. See the full list of times and locations here.
