TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - New Year's Eve is all about starting the year off right, happy, healthy and unharmed.
That's why when it comes to your four-legged family members you should take extra precautions to keep them safe.
All it takes is one big boom from a firework to set your dog or cat off running and they could get lost, injured or killed.
Experts said more pets run away on New Year's Eve than any other time of the year, except the 4th of July.
So no matter what you have planned this New Year's Eve, whether it's fireworks or a party, it is better to be safe than sorry, so keep pets indoors.
"Keeping them enclosed in a safe area that they feel comfortable in is very important as well. So if your party gets too loud or too raucous, maybe you want to have your animal in an enclosed space just to make sure they are safe," said Dr. Natalie Davidson, Veterinarian at Paws & Claws Veterinary Hospital.
Other tips, make sure all microchip information is up to date, never feed animals table scraps, sweets or alcohol, and exercise them to tire them out before the festivities start.
If there is a pet emergency, Allied Veterinary Hospital at 2324 Centerville Road is open 24 hours a day everyday.
