ALBANY, GA (WALB) - If you were shocked the last time you opened your power bill, Georgia Power has good news for you.
The power company says its customers usually see their highest bills during this time of year, but there are ways to save on energy. And saving energy means saving money on your next electric bill.
Sandy Godwin is a Georgia Power Energy Representative. She travels throughout South Georgia to help people save energy.
Every home is different, every apartment is different, how people use their appliances,” said Godwin.
But Godwin said there are common ways for people to save money.
First, check the caulk and weather stripping around windows and doors.
“You don’t want to see any daylight coming from the door frame,” said Godwin.
According to Georgia Power, sealing off any air leaks could help you save up to 10 percent on your energy use.
Also, keep your refrigerator stocked. Not only will it make for a happy stomach, but it will also help your power bill too.
“Having a fully stocked refrigerator, those items already in there help to keep other items cool,” said Godwin.
The representative also suggests people change their air filters at least once a month. And keep an eye on your cooling and heating units. Godwin said those are usually your biggest energy consumers.
“Air conditioners are in full swing during the summer months. You have higher temperatures, higher humidity levels, and those bills tend to go up,” Godwin said.
The power company also suggests that people buy a Nest learning thermostat. You can learn more about the programmable thermostats by clicking here.
