TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Though Halloween is a time for spooky fun, the holiday can also bring unknown dangers.

For most, Halloween means haunted houses, tons of candy, and of course, trick-or-treating. But for Florida law enforcement, the holiday is all about making sure residents are safe.

A quick search around the Florida State Capitol reveals there are nearly 500 sexual offenders and predators near the area. And that's just within a five mile radius.

While some of the offenders are transients, many of them are permanent residents in the Capitol City. That's why the Florida Department of Corrections is working with local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to monitor the offenders.

FDC says sex offenders under felony supervision in Florida have been warned not to take part in Halloween-related activities involving minors.

During designated "trick-or-treat" hours on Halloween, FDC probation officers will make personal contact with every sex offender under their jurisdiction and conduct surveillance in local communities.

They say they will also conduct surprise visits by probation officers, frequent residence monitoring, and increased surveillance at motels and treatment facilities that sex offenders use.

"Sex offenders have been given explicit instructions and our officers, in collaboration with local law enforcement, are working to make sure offenders remain in compliance so that families are able to enjoy Halloween activities safely," FDC Secretary Julie Jones said.

Sex offenders instructions regarding holiday restrictions include:

  • Do not give out candy or other treats.
  • Turn off porch lights, and close blinds.
  • No outside decorations to attract children.
  • Do not answer the door to trick-or-treaters.
  • Do not dress in costumes or masks.
  • Do not attend Halloween parties where children will be present.

Offenders who fail to obey will be subject to immediate arrest.
