TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - The Florida House has passed a bill that would provide extracurricular opportunities for those participating in school choice programs and add an additional requisite for athletic physicals.
The bill (HB 533) allows students to play sports or take part in other extracurriculars at a neighboring school if it is not offered at their current school. It also requires an electrocardiogram as part of the physical needed to participate.
Opponents of the bill claimed it allows for recruiting and questioned the fairness of a select group being able to pick where they play.
Proponents repeatedly shouted the mantra, "Let the kids play." The bill's sponsor, Rep. Manny Diaz, R-Hialeah, said it benefits public school students who want to participate in an activity not offered at their school.
