WASHINGTON (AP) — A top House Democrat says the Treasury Department investigator who probed the Internal Revenue Service's targeting of conservative groups failed to tell Congress that his own investigators concluded there was no evidence the targeting was politically motivated.
Maryland Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings released documents Friday that also seem to show that IRS officials wanted progressive groups to be treated the same as conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status.
The documents were attached to a letter Cummings sent to Rep. Darrell Issa, the California Republican who chairs the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. That committee — on which Cummings is top Democrat — has been investigating the IRS' treatment of conservative groups.
Cummings' letter is the latest Democratic attempt to challenge the fairness and accuracy of Treasury's probe of the IRS.
