CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - The newest online challenge isn’t one you want your children participating in. The “48-Hour Challenge” encourages children and teenagers to disappear from their parents for 48-hours.
It’s been reported there is also a point system associated with the “challenge” which rewards participants for time missing and the panicked social media posts of their parents.
“It’s terrible. Why would they want to manipulate someone’s affection for them like that,” Tri-State parent JJ Bradley said.
FOX19 Legal Expert Mike Allen warns that participation in this “challenge” can lead to legal repercussions with charges such as making false alarms or inducing panic. For minors those charges could lead to jail time.
“Normally it doesn’t happen on a first offense misdemeanor however, you know, if you get a judge or a magistrate that wants to send a signal that this isn’t going to be tolerated, I mean, they could do some time at the juvenile facility,” Allen said.
The Cincinnati Police Department said they have not seen any cases locally.
