CRAWFORDVILLE, FL (WTXL) -- Four horses are dead after a crash early Monday morning with a large truck.

The horses escaped from Camp Indian Springs in Crawfordville, after a tree fell and broke off a fenced area.

The Florida Highway Patrol says the horses got onto State Road 267, when the truck hit four of them, killing three instantly. The fourth had to be put down.

The road was closed for several hours after the accident, but everything has since re-opened.

Camp owner Derek Hart says the four horses that died - including his personal horse - were considered the leaders of the herd.

"It's really tragic for our camp family, for the camp community," Hart said. "We love our animals here. The kids love all the animals here, and we're devastated by the loss."

The camp says it will install a double layer of protection between the horses and the highway.
