TAYLOR COUNTY, FL (WTXL) -- Many consider veterans to be heroes for serving their country. One organization definitely agrees and that's why Saturday was all about our local vets in Taylor County.
The event, Hooked on Heroes, brings hundreds to Sea Hag Marine each year.
"I just think it's a great thing for the veterans in our area. I don't think enough is done for them. All these veterans deserve this and more," said Scott Senea.
Senea is one of many in a sea of veterans, each proudly wearing something that represents their military branch.
Spending a beautiful Saturday out on the boat is definitely time well spent. However, for more than 200 local veterans, this boat trip is an unforgettable outing. It's all thanks to Hooked on Heroes.
The non-profit takes them out fishing for the day in Steinhatchee and covers the cost of everything from supplies to food to gas.
"I don't get to get out much. I can't afford it with the family and the injuries everything that goes along with being a veteran, between the VA and your health. I think this is wonderful thing they do. It's fantastic and I can't wait," says Karl Cianaichelo.
Why fishing? The groups president, Ron Cadle, says it's something anyone can enjoy regardless of their range of motion.
"I never had a complaint yet. Most of them would go right back if I would take them. I'm giving them a little something back like they gave us when they fought for this country," says Cadle.
Veterans, of all ages, were nothing but smiles saying how grateful they were and how rare an opportunity like this is.
"All these people here, it's all veterans. I think it's good they're finally doing something for us," says Jack Sisk.
It's all made possible because of dedicated volunteers. From organizers to those who donate money, supplies and boats, they make this special trip a reality.
For volunteers it's not just about taking local veterans out for a fantastic, relaxing day on the water. They say they pride themselves on giving back to the people who ensure our freedom.
Hooked on Heroes hosts these one-day fishing trips twice a year. Donations from the community are greatly appreciated and allow these local heroes to have a stress-free day they'll always remember.
To help donation efforts, the Suwannee County Sheriff's Office will host a fundraiser next Friday afternoon at the Elks Lodge. All proceeds will go toward Hooked on Heroes and directly benefit veterans.
