TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A call for a hit-and-run crash lead police to find a loaded AK-47 inside a man's car.
Brad Gathers was arrested on Monday and charged with petit theft, hit-and-run, ad possession of a firearm by a convicted Florida felon.
The Tallahassee Police Department says they were called about a hit-and-run crash in the University Village Shopping Center at 2020 Pensacola Street.
The victim told them that she was driving when a black Toyota SUV hit her car and didn't stop. The victim took a picture of the SUV's license plate and gave it to police.
When they found the fleeing suspect vehicle, they spoke with the driver, identified as Brad Gathers. While looking at the car, officers noticed the wood handle of a rifle under the driver's seat.
During a search of the vehicle, police discovered a AK-47 inside the car that was loaded with a drum style magazine as well as a box of black latex gloves under the rifle. The tag on Gathers' vehicle was also reported as stolen.
An investigation revealed that the SUV was rented to Gathers and should have had a different tag on it.
As a result, Gathers was arrested and transported to the Leon County Detention Facility. He is being held on a $100,500 bond.
