ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Summer arrived Thursday morning, and South Georgia is certainly already feeling the heat that comes with it.

Doctors want to make sure you wear sunscreen when you're outdoors this summer.

That's to protect from getting a sunburn, but what about sun poisoning?

That's a couple levels deeper than a regular burn.

A few weeks ago, Betsy Diaz, a family nurse practitioner at Phoebe, talked with WALB about how young children are more at risk of getting sunburned or poisoned.

"Children that are less than six months of age should not be out in the sun for prolonged periods of time," explained Diaz. "They should have clothing on when they are outside, just making little short trips."

Diaz also said seniors are more prone to sunburn or sun poisoning because of the thinning of the skin.

She said sun poisoning comes with more signs and symptoms than just a sunburn.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said you should seek medical attention if you have these symptoms: dehydration, high fever (101 degrees or higher), severe sunburn covering more than 15 percent of the body and extreme pain lasting more than 48 hours.
