HAVANA, FL (WTXL) - A Havana organization is looking to help purchase a K-9 dog for the police department after the death of one of its dogs in July.

According to the Havana Stage Management Group, the Havana Police Department's first K-9 dog Nala died of cancer on July 1. The group says that Nala was responsible for hundreds of drug arrests during her years with the Police Department.

Since her absence, officers are looking for purchase a dog that can not only serve as a drug-alert but that can track as well. The Havana Stage Management Group says that this will help in efforts to find lost children and the elderly.

Chief Tracy Smith says that a new dog can cost between $8,000 to $9,000 and that having a K-9 within the department can help keep the community drug free.

The group hopes to help raise the money for the K-9 dog by holding a donation drive on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at the Stage/Fountain in Havana.
