BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A Haitian singer is recovering in South Florida from facial burns he suffered when his Carnival float touched a power line.

The accident and a subsequent stampede last week during a Carnival parade in the Caribbean country killed 17 people and injured 78.

Daniel Darinus goes by the stage name Fantom and is a member of the hip-hop group Barikad Crew. He says a man on their float was using a stick to move overhead power lines when the float unexpectedly surged forward.

Darinus credits doctors in Haiti for making his face "back to normal," and he says Haiti's government sent him to Florida for additional treatment. He wants to return home for the release of a new album next month.

Thousands attended Haiti's funeral Saturday for the 17 victims.
