SARASOTA, FL. (WTXL) - Background checks hit an all time high on Black Friday.
The number of background checks submitted in order to purchase a gun in Florida hit an all time high on Black Friday. A Sarasota Florida gun store tells WWSB, they saw a record high in sales Friday, after being open for only 2 and a half years. The manager says, they put deals on everything, and built packages for people when buying.
According to other Florida gun shops, there could be a number of reasons for the sales hikes, one being that people are unsure if the laws will change. They also say, people buy during times when high profile crime stories make headlines, like in 2012 when a gunman ran through Sandy Hook Elementary School, killing several people. Overall, the big issue is threats, and people looking to protect themselves.
Store owners in the state also say, there has been an increase in first time buyers wanting lessons so they can feel more comfortable and safe with their new firearm.
According to the federal bureau of investigation, nationally more than 175,000 background checks came in on Black Friday.
