TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - It's a law designed to keep you safe on the roads, but many aren't adhering to it.
WTXL ABC 27's Jada Williams was live Tuesday morning with a look at how law enforcement agencies are reminding you to Move Over.
It's a law that is designed to save lives, and today, some law enforcement groups are coming together to remind people of that mission.
The Move Over Law is designed to protect those on the side of the road, be it emergency responders or people stranded.
It states that drivers either slow down to 20 miles per hour below the speed limit or switch lanes.
On Tuesday, FLorida 511 along with FDOT and statewide transportation and safety partners are inviting the community to come out and hear the stories behind why this law is so important.
Trenda McPherson is the FDOT State Bicycle/Pedestrian Safety Coordinator.
"There's an average of around 200 crashes per year in FLorida," McPherson said. "We have seen the fatalities reduce in the last year. But any 1 fatality is too many. So of course any life lost is too many. We certainly want everyone to slow down and drive safely."
It takes place at the Florida Turnpike WPB Service Plaza, Mile Post 94 this Tuesday at 10 a.m.
The team will continue to travel the state educating people about the law during January, Move Over Awareness Month.
Last year Leon County drivers received 66 citations one none fatal crash happened.
This year's numbers have been better than last year's, but, as McPherson said, still too many people not adhering to the law.
