GRETNA, Fla. (WTXL) - A Gretna mother said she wants the city to address the flooding around her house.
At Shayna Alexander's house where she's lived for 18 years, when it rains, she said her land does take some water, but nothing like what has built up over recent weeks.
WTXL reporter Stephen Jiwanmall stood in several inches of water while at Alexander's house and had to wear rain boots.
Alexander said it was a lot worse just a couple weeks ago, as her neighborhood has gotten a lot of rain lately.
She said she feels like a prisoner in her own house. She said her daughter has had to miss school, because she couldn't get her there.
Alexander also has a prosthetic leg. She said the water has affected the material of that leg, and she's had to tie plastic bags around her legs just to get from place to place.
She said this wasn't the Christmas that she and her family wanted, and she's praying for a miracle.
"It's been so high my car has stalled out. I've gotten stuck in the yard when I had to get people to actually literally come and help me out of here. With the water getting as high as it is, it's caused problems as far as my plumbing isn't working properly now," said Alexander. "My air conditioning isn't working properly now. What I need to happen here is some sort of draining to be installed. I need someone to actually feel, you know, think about my situation as it being their own situation. Not overlook the problem, correct the problem."
Alexander said she's had to rely on friends and family to help her get out the house. She used money from Hurricane Michael relief to fix her gate, but because of the water, it's broken again.
We talked to the city manager about this situation. He said this road was paved earlier this year, but Alexander said because it's built higher than her property, water just spills back onto her home, and because the road is asphalt, it's not absorbing the water.
The city manager said it isn't possible to drain the water from the property or to force water away from it.
Alexander said she worries about the expected rainfall coming up and how that will make things more challenging.
