MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A Memphis teen is suffering severe pain after he contracted hookworms while on a mission trip.

Michael Dumas went on the trip back in June. While on the beach, he and some other friends buried each other in the sand on Pompano Beach.

His mother, Kelli Dumas, said in a Facebook post that he is in extreme pain and is taking a variety of medication valued at over $1,300 after insurance.

In that same post, she says officials in Pompano Beach told her  “Everyone knows to wear shoes on the beach because you can get parasites.”

Four others who were on the trip also contracted parasitic infections.
