"Grandparent scam" targets Tallahassee community

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A scam call called the "grandparent scam" is targeting the Tallahassee area.

The Tallahassee Police Department that in this scam, the call says that they are a family member who has been arrested, injured or in general need of help.

They then ask for money to help them get out of trouble.

TPD says that in some cases, the scammer pretends to have a cold or injury, which is why they "don't sound like themselves."

They report that many victims of the scam have given a lot of money to their "family member" to help get them out of trouble, only to discover later that it was all a scam.

If you receive a call like this, always verify the information.

They said that typically, the scammer will pressure you to immediately wire money or provide gift card numbers. 

Officers warn to hang up immediately, never send strangers money, and report the scam to law enforcement.
