TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Sunday at the Florida Capitol, Governor Rick Scott signed a bill creating the nation's first ever private voucher program for bullied students.
The measure creates a program where students who are victims of bullying and other types of violence can move to a different public school or receive a private school voucher.
It also includes a provision requiring Florida Teacher Unions to go through a re-certification process if their membership levels fall beneath a certain level.
Scott also signed a bill Sunday that revamps Florida's universities and colleges, and includes a significant boost in financial aid for the state's top performing high school graduates.
"On the higher education we're gonna make permanent the expansion of bright futures making sure the we can cover the December sessions. I want to thank President Negron, everybody in the senate for their hard work on that," said Scott. "Also were gonna try to make sure every university's continued focus on getting these students out in four years. So their cost of legislation is less and they get into the workforce as quickly as possible."
The voucher program is part of a sweeping bill that includes a requirement that all Florida schools must display the words "In God We Trust."
