TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - During his historic legislative luncheon, Governor Ron DeSantis reflected on his time in Congress and said he "got frustrated" with "how weak" it had become.
DeSantis said that won't be the case while he's in office and that he wants to restore power to the Legislative Branch.
Governor DeSantis and the First Lady received a standing ovation from the Legislature.
Both Republicans and Democrats from the House and Senate were invited to the luncheon.
DeSantis said in order for all of them to be productive, they need to be able to use their full authority.
He said the current crisis in Washington is a result of giving up some of that power and that he doesn't want that to happen here in Tallahassee.
"You guys have important jobs to do. You are not a subordinate branch to the executive, you know. You're an equal branch to the executive, and you should exercise your power accordingly," said DeSantis. "When you're doing that and you're accountable to your voters, that makes our system of government work better."
The governor said he's criticized the courts for taking powers from the legislature, but he will appoint three new Florida Supreme Court justices.
His first announcement will be Wednesday morning in Miami.
