TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - It's day 26 of the partial government shutdown and the effects are reaching far beyond Washington D.C., specifically to federal workers who need to pay child support.
In Florida, regardless of the government shutdown and not receiving a paycheck, federal workers are still required to pay for child support.
Family lawyers in Tallahassee said the best option for parents is to be proactive.
"You want to make sure that you're taking steps to provide for those kids because as sympathetic as the law might be, as the court might be to you as a federal employee who is not receiving a paycheck," said Attorney Matt Liebenhaut. "They're thinking about your kids before they're thinking about you. So you want to take steps and make sure that you're doing everything that you can to provide for your kids."
Matt adds that if you have any more questions the best thing to do is consult your family lawyer.
