Government says food stamp drug testing a violation of federal law

Posted

ATLANTA, Ga. (WTXL) The federal government is asserting that requiring food stamp recipient to undergo drug testing is a violation of federal violations.

The US Department of Agriculture says federal rules block states from imposing any additional eligibility standards on the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP).

The original Georgia law called for recipients suspected of drug abuse to undergo testing by the Department of Human Services.  Officials say the USDA will continue to advise Georgia on any further changes necessary for compliance.

A similar proposal requiring drug tests for food stamp recipients in Florida was declared unconstitutional by federal courts.
