TALLAHASSEE, FL. (WTXL) - Governor Rick Scott is reminding tourists that Florida is a "Safe State", after 10 more mosquito-transmitted cases of the Zika Virus are discovered in the Miami area.
Health officials issued a warning Monday, urging pregnant women to stay away from a neighborhood in Miami that has been heavily affected by the virus.
That travel advisory is also affecting international tourists, with British officials warning their residents who are looking to have children to avoid any non-essential trips to Florida.
Tourism officials are expecting a record 115 million visitors this year, Governor Scott says, "Federal and State officials can only do so much".
He says, it's important for residents to help stop the spread, by doing little things like getting rid of standing water.
With the growing Zika threat Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam says, Floridians are in a better position to fight the virus than other areas because of better infrastructure.
According to Putnam, "We're going to beat this. We're going to move forward, and Florida is very much going to remain the state that is known for its exceptional outdoor activities and opportunities, and this will be just one of the more interesting chapters written about Florida."
The Zika Virus generally produces mild symptoms and is specifically dangerous for pregnant women because it can lead to severe birth defects, including Microcephaly. More than 1,600 cases have been reported in the United States, most of them in Florida.
