TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Gov. Rick Scott and the Florida Cabinet say three prominent Florida historical figures who served in the Confederate army can't go into the state Veterans' Hall of Fame.
Scott and the Cabinet voted to reject their nominations Tuesday after being told they didn't qualify under state law because they didn't serve in the U.S. armed forces.
Members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans argued they should be included because they honorably served the state and became prominent citizens after the war. One was Florida Gov. Edward A. Perry.
But the state NAACP opposed their nomination. Tallahassee NAACP President Dale Landry said the men symbolized a time of hatred and slavery in U.S. history and that inducting them would be like flying a confederate flag over the Capitol.
