TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - It's the first day of the year and many workers at the Goodwill will be spending it sorting through thousands of donations.

That's because the last week of the year is when they see the most donations coming in.

People are rushing to drop off those donations to get tax write offs.

The donation centers will still see that influx of donations Tuesday, but if you're looking to put it on your 2018 taxes, it won't work because Tuesday is officially the start of a new year.

Goodwill of the Big Bend President and CEO Fred Shelfer said his team welcomes the influx of donations yearly.

"Donations and sales is just the beginning. The result of all of that is we can hire more people and train more people for jobs. It's all about jobs," said Shelfer.

For the first time ever, the center is opening up another GoodCents room in the warehouse.

That's where the clothes that didn't sell in the stores go to be sold for just a little over a dollar per pound.

That's because Goodwill saw more donations than usual following Hurricane Michael in addition to what they received the last week of December.
