TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) -- The first day of October marks a national campaign to go pink to help raise awareness and donations to support the fight against breast cancer.
The news at Sunrise and Midday has changed to a pink set and all month long our anchors will be wearing pink on set to show support in the fight against breast cancer.
Here are some other events:
The City of Tallahassee invites you to join the fight and drink pink on Thursday, Oct. 1. In a friendly competition with Leon County Government, the City will work to raise awareness and donations to support the fight against breast cancer. The #GoPinkLemonade Challenge, which will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Cascades Park, will pit City and County Commissioners and staff against one another in a challenge to sell the most pink lemonade.
"We want everyone to come join us for a refreshing glass of pink lemonade and taste how sweet it is to be a part of a community-wide effort to raise awareness for breast cancer," City Commissioner Curtis Richardson said. "Patrons should be prepared to hear some friendly trash talking between City and County leaders as we battle it out for a good cause."
Stopping by the City's #GoPinkLemonade stand will guarantee visitors a special treat with an opportunity to enjoy a glass of pink rosewater lemonade, courtesy of The Edison restaurant, the signature dining spot in the heart of Cascades Park. In addition, lunch options will be available for purchase at The Edison and from local food truck vendors.
"Every single person in this community knows someone who has experienced the heartache that comes with a cancer diagnosis," City Commissioner Gil Ziffer said. "That's why I'm challenging my fellow Leon County elected officials to bring their best game."
Proceeds from lemonade sales will benefit the Joanna Francis Living Well organization.
"I can already taste our victory in the Go Pink lemonade stand match-up between the City and County," City Commissioner Scott Maddox said. "However, the real winners are the patients and families served by the Joanna Francis Living Well organization."
"Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among American women and most of us know someone that has been impacted," City Commissioner Nancy Miller said. "This good natured competition with the County to raise money is an effort to bring attention to this disease and benefit the women right here in Tallahassee."
The public is also invited to take part in a unique community group photo. At noon on the field of Cascades Park, pink-clad participants will form the shape of a breast cancer awareness ribbon and pose for an aerial photo. This photo, which will be shared on the City and County's social media accounts, will demonstrate a united effort in the fight against breast cancer.
In addition to the #GoPinkLemonade Challenge, the City will be showing its support for breast cancer awareness by "painting" some of its most notable sites pink. City Hall will be illuminated pink Oct. 1 – 8. The City water tower near I-10 will be pink all month long, and the canopy of the Capital City Amphitheater in Cascades Park will be pink all month long except for Oct. 2, 3 and 4.
Beyond these grand displays, several City departments will be hosting various pink-themed events, including:
- Coffee and pink donuts for StarMetro customers at C.K. Steele Plaza, located at 111 W. Tennessee Street, from 7 – 9 a.m. on Oct. 1.
- A Par 3 Golf Tournament at Hilaman Golf Course, located at 2737 Blair Stone Road, on Oct. 9.
- Pink recycling bins in public places, such as Kleman Plaza and C.K. Steel Plaza, throughout the month.
- A pink message board on the City's TV station, WCOT (Comcast and CenturyLink channel 13).
- Pink graphics on the City's social media accounts.
