TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) -- Even though most of them have never filed their own taxes, students at Godby High School are getting qualified to help you with yours.

Students in the Academy of Finance at Godby High school can file your taxes for free, it is a program that started 6 years ago to give students the chance to learn more about financial literacy.

"We have the IRS come in. We have a representative that comes in. We train our students to be individual federal income tax preparers,” said Cari Molinaro, Lively Technical Center Assistant Principal. This year students from Lively Technical Center also joined the program.

Not only is the tax program an educational experience for the students who are trained through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, it benefits the community as well.

"It's a life skill and it's something that I'm going to be doing for most of my adult life. Might as well have some knowledge about how to run my own finances and do so in a manner that efficient,” explained Alonzo Garcia, a student tax preparer at Godby.

So far this year the students have filed 40 tax returns and they are hoping to top last year’s number of 100.

"This is my third or fourth year coming here. The students are very bright and helpful,” said Glorida Rodriguez.

If you are interested in getting your taxes done you can stop by the Media Center at Godby High School, any Monday between now and April 11th.  They will be closed on March 14th.
