NEW YORK (AP) — The silver screen lags well behind the TV screen in portrayals of gay and lesbian characters, an advocacy group says in a new report.

GLAAD, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, says in its first report on major studio releases that such films are reluctant to include LGBT characters in significant roles or franchises. This is particularly true, it says, in comic-book adaptations or action franchises.

In 2012, the year it examined, it says that of 101 releases from the six biggest studios, only 14 included characters identified as lesbian, gay, or bisexual. Most were cameos or minor roles, and there were no transgender characters in any films.
