WASHINGTON (AP) — A new path for social change is available courtesy of a mobile app designed to help real families through the purchase of virtual goods.
"Giv Galaxy" is an iPhone game in which players buy goods virtually to help feed villagers and provide them with medicine. A portion of the proceeds from those virtual purchases go to help families in need.
The player assumes the role of a creature in the alternate universe of Planet Zarru trying to gain his badge in Planetary Helping. For every $1 spent on goods in the game, 25 cents goes to a person in need of food, shelter or health care.
The creators of the free app, which launched last week on iTunes, say it's already been downloaded in more than 50 countries.
