TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - One organization is providing mentors for young girls in Tallahassee.

That organization, named Girls 2 D.I.V.A.S, provides mentors to help uplift young black girls in Tallahassee.

D.I.V.A.S is an acronym for driven, initiative, virtuous, astounding, and succesful.

The program provides one-on-one mentoring to help those girls accomplish each letter in the DIVA acronym.

Girls 2 D.I.V.A.S started in 2011, when founder Janay White was still a student at FAMU.

White says bullying throughout grade school led her to start the organization all in an effort to help other young women going through what she went through.

"Just, life. Just going through life at a very young age, wanting girls to know that whatever they go through, they can overcome," she said, "and looking at society, our divas, our young girls not having anyone to look up to that looks like them, and providing that opportunity is why I decided to start Girls 2 D.I.V.A.S."

White says she's seen how the program has changed the lives of the mentees and the mentors and she hopes to continue to see that.

Anyone interested in joining - whether as a mentor or mentee - is invited to reach out to the organization for more info.
