MIDDLEBURG, Fla. (AP) — A 14-year-old northeast Florida high school student died when a vehicle struck her as she walked to her bus stop.
The Florida Highway Patrol's Capt. Keith Gaston said the incident happened early Thursday in Fleming Island, a community south of Jacksonville and east of Middleburg.
Gaston says Gianna Asencio was walking alone when a vehicle struck her.
School officials say there was no active crossing zone or crossing guard in the area.
The Florida Times-Union (bit.ly/15VMTXc) reports a jogger witnessed the crash. Officials say one car passed Asencio and a second car hit her. A jogger witnesses the crash.
Troopers say charges are unlikely. The driver stopped and assisted in the investigation.
