Valdosta officials responding to sewage spill

Posted

VALDOSTA, Ga. (AP) - Valdosta city officials say they're responding to a major sewage spill in the Withlachoochee River.

WTCV reported Thursday that nearly eight million gallons of raw sewage has spilled into the river.

Valdosta city officials say recent heavy rainfall may have caused sewage to be discharged from the Withlachoochee Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Officials say they're working to repurpose some of the tanks at the water treatment center to accommodate the sewage.

City officials say sewage levels in the river are 1.5 times higher than the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit limit.
