2 Ga. sheriff's deputies fired after inmate escape

GAINESVILLE, Ga. (AP) - Hall County Sheriff's officials say two deputies have been fired after an inmate escaped from custody last week.

Authorities said Tuesday that two deputies assigned to transport detail July 16 were fired after 46-year-old James Edward Cantrell escaped. Cantrell was being taken from the courthouse to a bus being used to take inmates back to the county jail.

Sheriff's officials tell the Gainesville Times the deputies didn't have the inmates lined up in an orderly fashion and weren't in a proper position to monitor them.

Officials say the deputies didn't see Cantrell slip out of line and hide in an alcove, and failed to do a head count before leaving the courthouse, when the bus was loaded, and when it arrived at the county jail.

      Cantrell was captured Monday.
