ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia early childhood education officials say childcare programs are teaming up with local farmers to coordinate field trips for more than 370,000 children to farmers' markets, farms and more.
Department of Early Care and Learning spokesman Reg Griffin says the department is joining Georgia Organics to celebrate "Farm to Preschool Day" on Oct. 18.
Aside from field trips, the event is expected to feature taste-testing using locally grown produce and more.
The Department's Nutrition Project Manager Jennifer Popadiuk says the event helps recognize the role farmers and agriculture play in Georgia. Popadiuk says many would be surprised to learn that some of the state's more than 47,000 farmers are operating in metropolitan areas.
