COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) — Military officials say two servicemen assigned to Fort Benning in Georgia were among a group of soldiers killed during an attack in Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense on Tuesday identified the soldiers with Georgia ties as 25-year-old Sgt. Patrick C. Hawkins of Carlisle, Penn.; and 24-year-old Pfc. Cody J. Patterson of Philomath, Ore.

Both were assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment at Fort Benning.

Authorities say Hawkins and Patterson were among four soldiers killed Oct. 6, when enemy forces attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device.

The other soldiers killed in the attack were 25-year-old 1st Lt. Jennifer M. Moreno of San Diego, Calif.; and Sgt. Joseph M. Peters, 24, of Springfield, Mo.
