MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) - A former Cobb County sheriff's sergeant who was indicted on charges of rape, sexual assault and violation of oath by a public office has been given a 40-year sentence.
Authorities say 52-year-old Alvin Blake Sutherland must serve 20 years of the sentence in prison.
Sutherland was accused of having sexual encounters with female inmates at the Cobb County Jail and elsewhere between June 2009 and January 2013. He was arrested Jan. 18.
District Attorney Vic Reynolds tells The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (http://bit.ly/1dEG6mX) that Sutherland on Monday pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting female inmates.
As part of his sentence, he will have to register as a sex offender.
